The Bangalore Royal Challengers kept their play-off hopes alive with a two-wicket victory over Chennai in Durban.
Needing just 130 for victory Bangalore made heavy work of the moderate target sneaking home with just two balls to spare. Ross Taylor looked set to guide his side home, but when he was out for 46 in the last over it seemed the Super Kings might just grab it from them.
Chennai’s innings was a tale of two halves. It began with another brutal Matthew Hayden knock of 60 from just 38 balls, before the Super Kings collapsed under the pressure of some tight Bangalore bowling, losing their last six wickets for 28 runs and ending on 129 - well short of what they would have envisaged when Hayden was going at full throttle.
Hayden’s early power-hitting kept Chennai on track for a big total, Bangalore’s bowlers took control after the strategy break, adding pressure to the fall of wickets by keeping it tight in the field.
In response the Royal Challengers got off to a terrible start losing three early wickets, but a solid partnership between Virat Kohli and Ross Taylor put Ray Jennings’s men back in contention.
But the momentum swung yet again when the Super Kings picked up a few quick wickets including the run-out of Roelof van der Merwe after some poor running from the South African all-rounder.
Chennai grabbed the crucial wicket of Taylor in the final over leaving the men in red needing a run a ball off the last five deliveries for victory which they managed with a couple to spare when Vinay Kumar cracked a boundary.
Chennai - 129 (19.4 overs)Matthew Hayden 60, Anil Kumble 2-12, Jacques Kallis 2-18.
Bangalore - 132-8 (19.4 overs)Ross Taylor 46, Virat Kohli 38, Albie Morkel 2-13.
